Montrose F.I.D.A. Disability ClinicsDownload the Disability Clinics brochure for 2011. The Montrose Football Club, in partnership with the Shire of Ranges and the Federation of Intellectually Disabled Athletes ( FIDA ) are offering people with an intellectual disability aged 12 and over, the opportunity to learn the skills of Australian Rules Football.
Our FIDA Clinics have come to an end for season 2011 with a wonderful Presentation morning at the Ken Dowling Pavilion on Saturday 13th August. We started off with a fantastic DVD prepared by Ben and Tricia Sawyer from photos taken throughout the season. Everyone enjoyed looking back over the happy times the boys have had with Glenn and Terry, and Ben had some great footy songs on the soundtrack accompanying the photos. We then moved on to the presentation of the trophies to all the participants, with special assistance from Jack as a guest presenter. The highlight of the trophy presentations was one to Ryan Pope for attendance at 50 Clinics! Congratulations Ryan, this is a wonderful effort considering we have only 9 clinics each year. There are a number of people to thank particularly, without whom these clinics could not run. Firstly to the Montrose Football Club who host and sponsor the clinics, subsidise the lunches and provide kit and equipment. To the members of the Junior committee who are always extremely helpful and accommodating each Sunday we are there, when it is their game day. To the players from the senior club who assist Glenn and Terry every Sunday, and Troy Simmonds, the senior coach for conducting one of the clinics. Towards the end of this season we welcomed Peter Cameron, a retired past player, who has become involved with the coaching of the boys - we are delighted to have him on our team! To the Dads who also help out when needed each week, with a very special mention to David Pearce. And of course to Ben Sawyer - without the photos and DVD our Presentation would not be such an enjoyable occasion. We must also thank Harry van Koll, the Colts coach and his large group of boys who have a special clinic with us each year - this year we had a game on the main oval, how good was that! I would personally like to thank Karen Rickard for her assistance with the lunches , her help has certainly made my job a lot easier. And let's not forget a quick thank you to Hugh at Montrose Charcoal Chicken for having the delicious chicken and chips ready for us each week. This year it has also been great to welcome two main sponsors of the clinics, Melba Support Services and EAL Transport Group. We sincerely appreciate their financial support and the genuine interest they have shown in making sure the clinics continue to run in the best posible way. Someone else working behind the scenes but who is making this webpage available for us is Joy Carrick from FeralArt. Joy does the updating of the Reserve website but by far the biggest contributor is the FIDA clinics. It's fantastic to have this communication and we really appreciate it Joy, thank you so much. And last but not least our "two main men" Glenn and Terry, our wonderful coaches. Their patience, expertise and friendship has seen a steady development of both social and footy skills, but best of all they make the clinics a really enjoyable time for all the participants. A huge thank you to you both. My kindest regards to all our participants, parents, friends and carers, you are a very special part of the Montrose Football Club. Montrose Football Club continues to host and support the FIDA / Access For All Abilities Football Clinics and the 2011 season has got off to a good start. The clinics are run by qualified coach Glen Rickard, who coached the Colts teams to two premierships in 2001 and 2004. He is ably assisted by Terry Layton, former Football Manager of the Club. Every clinic is also supported by players from the senior teams, so our participants are getting the very best coaching possible. This year Melba Support Services have come on board as the major sponsor of the Clinics and have provided club jackets to all participants. The jackets, with the boys names embroidered on them alongside club and Melba logos, were very enthusiastically received after lunch at the clinic on Sunday 29th May. At the same clinic Montrose Football Club coach and ex-AFL player, Troy Simmonds assist Glen. The boys were very excited to have Troy there and he did a great job making sure they all had fun while learning some skills as well. Lots of photos following ! Each home game Glen and Terry organise for one of the boys to attend the upcoming home game and assist with the coin toss. James McArdle tossed the coin at the Montrose/ Mulgrave game on the 21st May. Well done James ( photos following) We will celebrate another participant reaching his 50th Clinic milestone in the next few weeks. Ryan Pope started at the clinics in 2004 and continues to attend and enjoy them. As there are only 9 clinics each season ( and used to be only 6 ) it takes some perserverance to get to 50. We look forward to celebrating soon with Ryan and his parents John and Julie.

We had a wonderful Presentation and morning tea in the pavilion at the last home game for Montrose . Every participant was able to attend and the boys received a trophy each for their great efforts throughout the year. Glenn, our coach, and Terry his assistant received an award for their time and commitment to the FIDA Clinics, and Ben was also recognised for his wonderful support for Glenn and Terry and for all the extra things he does. We then had a very special presentation - Mark Sawyer received a trophy to acknowledge his 50th Clinic, a fantastic record Mark. He is the first participant to reach this milestone and his brother Ben made a banner to" mark" the occasion as he ran onto the ground to lead out the Reserves team for their game. All the awards were presented by Greg Gardoll, President of the Seniors and Gary Felstead, President of the Juniors. We thank them and all the other committee and members who attended. The boys also received scarves and caps donated by the footy club. Here are some photos from the presentation.
Participants in the FIDA clinic one wet Sunday in June were able to make the most of the new facility by coming upstairs to do some very inventive inside training drills rather than miss a clinic because of inclement weather. Coach Glenn Rickard, senior players Dylan Rickard ( Montrose FC Captain), Adam Bonsak, Dean Stephen and Andrew Haining made the session great fun for all.
Ben, Mark and Tony Sawyer. Tony Sawyer successfully applied for a Telstra grant for the Clinics to buy some equipment for the participants. His son Mark attends regularly and his older son Ben helps with the clinics. Montrose Football Club sincerely thanks Tony for his initiative and the good outcome. Participants from one of last year's clinics with coaches Chad, Barney and Daniel.
